The Lighthouse and the Whaler

Do you have advice for someone just starting to write music? What's it take to get better?

Just keep writing! You get better over the years. Just like anything else, if you want to get better at it keep doing. You might write 20 songs or more for the 1 that builds you an audience, but all those songs leading to that 1 will have been important because they led you to owning your craft. After you've written a song...ask yourself "Is this good? How can I do it better?" The trick is knowing when to stop criticizing yourself and when to say this is good.

The other thing I would recommend is treat it like a job. It's easy to be inspired for a moment which may lead to an idea but not a full fledged song. You can have hundreds of ideas but until you treat it like a work day you probably won't have a song.

I hope this helps. The main thing is to just keep making music and have fun! Thanks for the question and for listening to our band. I wish you the best!
